SFI is returning in 2026 and is continuing with its aim to ‘support farmers to manage their land in ways that deliver environmental benefits as they produce food’. The 2026 offer has been redesigned with fewer actions, amended payment rates, capped total payments and a fixed application window.

There are now 71 actions available (down from 102 in SFI24), with those removed as a result of low uptake, low environmental benefit, poor ‘value for money’ and potential overlap with other schemes.

Some high-paying actions, such as herbal leys, winter bord food and legume fallow, have had their payments cut to avoid incentivising taking productive land out of food production. Importantly, these reductions apply only to new SFI26 agreements. The overall management payment has also been removed.

There are also new caps and limits:

  • £100,000 annual cap per agreement
  • One agreement per business
  • 25% area limit continues for certain actions (e.g., margins, bird food, stubble)
  • Enhanced overwinter stubble added to the 25% cap
  • Rotational actions cannot exceed Year 1 area in later years

Application Windows

  • Window 1 — June 2026 for small farms of less than 50 hectares and those with no existing RPA managed environmental scheme
  • Window 2 — September 2026 will be open to all farms
